Bonding

This is to be cohesively to a manufacturing process in which parts are glued. In the pencil manufacturing, a lead is glued between two grooved wooden boards.

Certification?

What is that? PEFC is the synonym for Sustainable Forest Management, equal consideration the ecological, economic and social criteria. But not the product is certified wood, but the forest management, including timber transportation to the forest road. In the "processing chain" of wood, from the forest to the finished product, each company provides an important link. Therefore, it is necessary that all the companies that work with wood and wood products act or, to be certified. This certification of the product chain ("chain of custody") makes it possible to trace the flow of wood throughout the production process from certified forests for forest-based operation through to the finished product. This ensures that the wood flow is continuously tracked in the processing chain.

Clay

Is a natural material, which is one of the basic materials for the production of pencil leads, together with graphite.

Colored pencil lead

The lead consists of pigments and of finely ground kaolin. These leads are not burned, but dried in special ovens.

Copy pens

Invented in the second half of the 19th century, it was originally intended to copy, later he served before the invention of the ballpoint pen is the only indelible pen.

DIN EN 71-3

Since November 2002 the revision of the standard EN 71-3 is available. This European standard has been adopted as DIN EN 71-3 in the German body of standards. There are now the 5th version of the standard part. It is believed that children's toys and lick it around gnaw so that certain amounts may reach material in the stomach. The Directive limits the bioavailability of toxic substances in children's toys to, for antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium. In test procedures defined triggering (migration) is simulated certain elements from toy material with artificial gastric juice. When examining the solubles are extracted under conditions of the coatings of toys that meet a fate in the digestive tract if swallowed. The proportion of dissolved and hence bioavailable elements is quantified, compared to 1 kg of toys and converted to the specified limit for each element. The values ??obtained were adjusted so that on the one hand any possible exposure of children is limited by toxic elements to a minimum and secured the other hand, the analytical feasibility by limits are taken into account, which can be reached under current production conditions. Requirements of DIN EN 71-3 are fulfilled if the limit values ??are exceeded.

Dozen

Unit, which is still in use in the pencil industry today: 1 dozen = 12 pieces

Embossing RGB

describes the method of compressive deformation, are pressed at the character in a surface. This is done with special stamping machines. Pencils and crayons can a company name by stamp and colored foil get stamped on the pin an imprint, for example.

End cap

The colored cap at the end of the pencil is called end cap. For this purpose, the pin end is held approximately 2 mm deep in an immersion bath with color.

Eraser

Erasers are made of specially produced rubber, which is suitable for removing strokes with pencil or ink.

Ferrule

A ferrule is the connecting part between pencil and eraser. Usually it is made out of metal, and is colored silver or black.

Folding rule

A folding rule is also called »pocket rule« or »folding meter«. In a folded out position it has a total length of 2 m (double meter). Longer versions such as 3 m or shorter ones like 1 m or even 0,5 m are available. A folding rule is made of several parts that are riveted with the following part. (fitting) The fitting can either be inside or external. With its riveted parts a folding rule is easily be folded into a handy size.

Graphite

When graphite is a crystalline carbon, a mineral from the okay of non-metals. First finds were made in the Middle Ages in the region Cumberland. The designation comes from the Greek "graphein" which means "write" means. The English word for graphite is "plumpago" and means "similar to the Lead", which is certainly also to the incorrect designation "pencil" lead.

Gros

Majority Unit, which is still in use in the pencil industry today: 1 Gros = 12 dozen = 144 pieces

Groove

The groove is an elongated depression or groove. In the pencil manufacturing prefabricated wooden boards with grooves are provided, corresponding to the diameter of the mines.

Hardness

By combining varying amounts of graphite and clay produced different degrees of hardness. The higher the proportion of graphite, the softer the mine, the higher the clay content, the harder the mine. Affect the final hardness also have internal heat and burning time. The B stands for soft black =, the H stands for hard = hard and F for fine = fine (medium writing thickness). The degrees of hardness ranging from 8B to B (black) and H to 8H (hard). An HB pencil is exactly in the middle and is also the most common drawing instrument among them.

Kaolin

Besides the color pigments raw material for the production of colored pencil leads.

Lacquered cap

As immersion cap is called a colored cap on the pen end. For this purpose, the pin end is held deep up to 2 cm in an immersion bath with color.
Lacquered ring
If an additional color accent in the form of a subtle color ring as completion of the immersion cap.

Lubricity

To achieve a good lubricity, the color pencil leads are soaked in oil. The fired pencil leads In order to achieve good slip refined with hot oil or wax.

Metal cap

This cap is made out of metal and colored in silver, gold or copper. The magnetic-pencil has a magnet inside this cap, but it can also be used as a decorative accessory for black pencils.

Painting

Is the coating of objects with coating, a liquid or powder coating material. This is by chemical or physical processes to form a continuous, solid film. It is used to protect or to achieve a particular color effect.

Pencil

The misnomer arose when it was held the graphite found in England for lead in the Middle Ages. The correct term is actually "lead pencil"

Pencil lead

The mine consists of a mixture of ground graphite and clay and added binders. Originally was the mine from pure graphite, which was cut from blocks.

Preciosa® crystals

A jewelry crystal made of cut glass from Preciosa in Bohemia. Crystal pencils have cut crystals at the back end, these are available in over 21 different crystal colors.

Polishing

Polishing is a smoothing processing methods for various materials.

Slicer

A slicer is a tool for working with wood. The surface of the wood is processed by chips are removed from the material to the cutting knives. From the two compressed wooden boards with the intervening glued-mines the pin blanks are (round, three flat or hexagonal) sliced out in the final form.

Use

The pencil is not only to write but also to draw pictures. It impresses with the ability to produce very fine lines, which is not possible with comparable materials such as pastels and charcoal. Especially in the typical for the Romantic landscape drawings of the pencil was used frequently because of its fine stroke. Furthermore, there is graphite chalk, consisting of a thick graphite lead with a foil as a cover, which is especially suitable for sketching and coloring large areas.

Wood

for the production of lead and colored pencils almost exclusively cedar was formerly used. Today it is still used for high-quality pens. Today mostly linden or maple, as well as pine are used.
